Established in 2004 as South-Western Ontario’s premier lavender producer, Great Lakes Lavender has become an annual destination for lavender lovers and day trippers alike.
In 2004, an initial 500-plant trial of five
varieties has
led Great Lakes Lavender on a journey that has shaped the landscape of
Chatham-Kent. Over the past seven years, Great Lakes Lavender has
tested the
limits of lavender growing in Southern Ontario, growing to three acres
(10,000
plants), used innovative production methods, and has developed a
product line
that customers return for year after year.
This fragrant plant has been a fascinating education
and a rewarding
endeavor. Nevertheless, innovative farm crops do not come without their
share
of hardships. Over the past few years, our Southwestern Ontario climate
has
taken its toll on certain cultivars, causing significant plant loss.
Despite these losses, this spring has shown successes in the field and our presence in Chatham-Kent. The plants have delivered masses of purple flowers which we endeavor to share with our community. Great Lakes Lavender is determined to find a way to make lavender a destination in Chatham-Kent for years to come.
